Ingrid Van Nyman's Pippi Longstocking

To contact us Click HERE

Soon Drawn and Quarterly is going to release the original comic book versions of Pippy Longstocking which were written by Astrid Lindgren herself (!) and illustrated by the original illustrator of the Pippi Longstocking books namely, Ingrid Van Nyman. I myself grew up with the Pippi Books illustrated by Walter Scharnweber (the German version I guess) which I am quite fond of. Having said that I am super excited to find the work of Nyman and am already totally in love with her now. Such a fun feel to them, so much imagination in there and I love the colours. It's crazy to think that she ended up tragically taking her own life. What a tragedy. She was so fantastic!

Hi there, can you believe it's December already!? And that Hanukkah starts this weekend and Christmas is only 22 days away!? I guess most of my clients know this. I'm saying that because this has literally been a month of holiday cards! It started at the beginning of November and is still going strong. And while most poeple have purchased packs already printed and blank inside, there have been quite a few that have customized their cards this year!

I've had everything from keeping the exterior the same and just adding a friendly saying to the inside to completly new and original cards that people have created to send out for the holidays. Above are some of my favorites. The top three have the original design to the left and the adaptations to the right. And the bottom cards are interiors and exteriors of completely unique cards.

What do you think?

Will you be sending holiday cards this year?!

It's the Holiday Season

So I've basically been running a marathon of holiday order after holiday order since September and it's been absolutely incredible. I feel so lucky and so blessed to have been as busy as I have been this season. But while it's been wonderful to be this busy my last order went out yesterday and in order to celebrate I've decided to draw for me today.... and bring back Coco and Louie. I'm a little rusty. but I still love them!

What do you think? And what have you been up to this holiday season?

O my goodness, how it is 2013 already!? How was your holiday?

Mine was fabulous and busy, filled with to much food and drink, friends and laughs, family and presents... I'm always sad to see the holidays come and go and get back to my usual routine so for now let's recap the wonderful holiday season! I saw three movies in particular that I loved (Silver Linings Playbook, The Words, and Pitch Perfect) (if you haven't seen them you definitely should!), drank champagne, watched the entire first season of American Horror Story (had never seen it before but now am hooked), spent a day in New York City, went outlet shopping and purchased a fabulous red Kate Spade laptop bag for 70% off (Woo Hoo!), drank Champagne, relaxed a little, ate cookies, spent the weekend in the Poconos, ate dessert while drinking champagne, worked on personal marketing pieces to send out in the New Year, drank Champagne, ate dessert, ate cookies, exchanged presents and received an absolutely beautiful Michael Kors leather jacket, made pot after pot of yummy soup, and drank more champagne...

and now it's time to start working out, to finish the marketing pieces to expand my company in 2013, to update my website, to launch a new company with one of my dearest friends, and to eat healthy.

Bring it on 2013 I'm ready!!

Happy New Year Sweets, xo!

Back in June I showed you a logo and watermark design I had worked on with the fabulous Kristin Gainey Photography. Well Kristin so nicely sent me photos of the logo in action on her packaging.

Take a look! What do you think? I personally love it (not to toot my own horn or anything) I think it goes so nicely with her aesthetic and packaging (Especially on the m&m's - she is a girl after my own heart!). Check out her site, and her blog as well to see her incredible work!

Thank you again Kristin. It was wonderful working with you and it's so exciting to see the final product!

Top inspired by this one  just purchased from Anthropologie, vegan leather skirt from Urban Outfitters, and red studded heels inspired by these originally found on Piperlime but they don't have them anymore :-(
Tis the season for party after party, candles, lights, and presents. And of course time with friends and family. And I don't know about you, but I love getting dressed up for parties. Festive attire, glitter, and silk... love it.

What will you be wearing this holiday season?

Diary of a Freelancer: The Art of Respect

"an oldie but a goodie" Coco and Louie back for a quick hello! Need to bring new ones back soon!

I want to apologize in advance in case this post gets a little "ranty" and I want to let you know that it in no way makes me like my job any less or my clients who have been absolutely incredible! But here goes... I'm pretty sure that up until this point the negatives I've discussed regarding being a freelancer are more like positive negatives. You know, like when you are on a job interview and they ask you for the things you need to improve on, or your biggest weakness, and you turn your weakness into a good thing, like I don't know how to say no or I'm honest to a fault. Well... today, I hate to say it, but I have a true negative.

This is something that I've struggled with but also that a lot of other designers I know struggle with as well. It's usually clients/people who are looking for a design or illustration but don't appreciate the effort and the time it takes to create custom pieces. They want something special, high quality, unique, and perfect, but at the Walmart mass produced price and as speedy quick as a one hour photo.

To explain better, and to clue you in on what caused this rant, a good friend of mine did work for a business owner. She created a beautiful marketing piece for them and when the contract was created it was considered a one-time piece that the client would not get the file or be able to edit. A year later the client contacted my friend asking for the file to edit themselves and did not want to pay for it.  And I know a lot of people might think, ok so just send the file, it's no big deal... but here's the issue... If the client wanted the template to use on their own my friend would have created a completely different contract, cost, and file type. And since her client caught her off guard, she didn't want to offend them, and she was struggling to explain why it wasn't ok. So my friend came up with this analogy:  If you ordered a cake from a bakery, loved the cake, and the next year on your birthday wanted the same one but thought, I'll just call the bakery and ask for the recipe and get it for free. It doesn't work that way for a baker, so why should it work that way for an artist.

Her client didn't seem to understand that she was getting a product, of very high quality, that any designer would take an incredible amount of time agonizing over every little detail like the spacing between the letters "h" and "e" in the word "the" (and I'm not even exaggerating here). It takes a lot of time and effort. My friend, me, and any other artist I know only puts work out there that they are proud of. It represents them, and the way their work is reflected may attract, or detract, clients depending.

Now my intention is definitely not to offend anyone. Truth is, I've been blessed enough to not have to deal with issues like this often. But I have, just like most of my friends have. And it can be incredibly insulting and frustrating. And we still have yet to figure out the right solution.

I also would just like to say, from the bottom of my heart, thank you to all of my incredible clients and people who have commissioned me for work. I couldn't ask for better clients. Your appreciation of my work and my effort means more to me then I can say.

Hi there, how was your Christmas?

Mine was wonderful and I'm a little sad to see it go, but I still consider the next week part of "Christmas" time so at least it keeps going through New Years. And while the next few days will be filled with fun nights out with friends, catching up with family, and just overall enjoying myself... today was snowy and sleety and rainy and so I stayed inside caught up on work and lounged in my pajamas (cute gold polka dot ones from Target - Thank you Mama!) with hot tea all day. It felt awesome.

What did your day after Christmas look like? Where you working like me, shopping, spending time with family?

It's time for Holiday Cards { A GIVEAWAY }

To contact us Click HERE

I love sending Christmas cards.Especially silly ones. Last year we didn't send out a card.We had nice pictures taken of the family in plenty of time to have them made, but I just didn't take them time to send them out. I was determined this year would be a different. Basically I have been planning our cards since August. So imagine my excitement when my friend Katy told me she was going to be making holiday cards and selling them in her shop.
love this one
this one too

I had the privilege of helping with some of these! I drew up some things and Katy worked her magic and incorporated them into the card designs like this one with the proceeds going Hope for Sudan. Also, she has this card with proceeds going to the Joyful Life Library.
It's so hard to pick just one because I really love them all. However, I was able to narrow down a favorite. I won't show you  though because, well, then it wouldn't be a surprise when I send out our cards.
Which on is your favorite? How would you like to win one?Yep, Katy is giving away a card of your choice to a lucky winner!Use the rafflecopter below and good luck!

ALSO I have comment moderation on. If you post a comment it won't appear until after I approve it :)

“We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love.”

-Mother Teresa

Every time I read that quote I kind of choke up.
Kind of as in, I do. Like when I sit and really think about it tears come to my eyes.

This weekend we had plenty of food. We had warm clothes. We had entertainment. We did have some uncomfortable times when our kitchen sink pipes practically deteriorated and we had to replace them. Other than that, we were very comfortable.

I don't know a time I have ever been without. Even as a child when my parents may have not had lots of extra, we never went without.
I am thankful for that, and I know because of that I have the opportunity and privilege of giving to those who are suffering.

Right now so many in the northeast are going without as a result of Hurricane Sandy. The stories I have read online or heard through the news are heartbreaking. I want to help and I want to give.
Throughout November and December 2012 50% of every
"Do Small Things With Great Love" print from Pen & Paint
will go to American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Relief efforts. I am working on a printable for purchase with 100% of the proceeds to be donated as well.

I have submitted my information to the Red Cross and have been approved as a donor, and I am so grateful I can give to help those in need.

We have several other shops who have chosen to do small things with great love through Handmade With Purpose. Please check out who is helping, and be sure to let us know if you want to join in. And remember you can always simply just donate to the Red Cross directly.

I can't wait. It will be the perfect gift for so-and-so or myself ;)
A few days go by. No shipping notification.
Hmmmmm.
Why hasn't my order shipped?
I send a message to the shop owner.
The shop owner has to point out to me that orders ship in ____ business days. AND it's all over their shop.
In the shop announcement.
In the item listings.
In the message to buyer once I placed my order.
The problem is I need it like tomorrow. The problem is I didn't read all the info so now I might not receive my order in time.

You would think as a shop owner I'd remember to READ everything before placing my order. I get so excited sometimes I forget. I've been working really hard at doing it, but I still slip up. So now before I go send a message to a shop owner, I go back and look at all their information first.
As customers we HAVE to keep in mind that shop owners are not only selling goods.
They are people with lives outside of our screens.
Shop owners have to take care of their homes, cook, clean, take care of their families. Some have full time day jobs outside of their shops! Some of them do have assistants and staff, but I think for the most part, like with me, it's a one woman show here. From start to finish, I am doing it all. I create, manage orders, package, print labels, double check, take things to the post office and everything in between. And I also stay at home with two busy little boys. I am SO grateful that I am able to do both, but it also means I can't ship like Amazon or Walmart. Everything takes time. Most work gets done during nap time or after my boys have gone to bed. I recently had to increase my turnaround time  to 3-5 business days. I HATED doing it. I want everyone to have their order like right then, but I can't. And neither can most shop owners.

I share all this to encourage customers and shop owners alike.
Shop owners, be sure to have your shipping info ALL over the place. You can't say it enough.
If you are on Etsy take advantage of the shipping preferences we now have access to that gives us the option of letting the customers know it will ship in ____ business days. Put it in your shop announcement and each listing too. Put it in the message to buyer so once they make their purchase they see when they should expect their order to ship. Also, take advantage of the shipping notification system. It makes me super happy to click that button and know my customers get an email that their order has shipped. I know it sounds cheesy but seriously, I really love using it. It equals crossing something of my list. Oh, and keep in mind your customers are excited to receive their purchases so be sensitive to them. They are choosing to support you and that deserves good attention and responses, even if they aren't immediate.

Customers, read, read, read, read, read. Shop owners want HAPPY customers. The only way we can be sure you are happy is to keep you informed and provide what we commit to sell you. I hate reading directions and information. I am so bad about it. BUT as customers we have to. If we don't we will end up not being happy and that's just no good. Also, if you need something rushed or overnighted, check the shop's policies. Some shops offer that service but at an extra cost. Always ask first. It's not polite to place an order and say in the message to seller at checkout, "Ship this ASAP." I promise you, shop owners are shipping ASAP, and there is an order items are shipped. :) And most of all, remember we are all human and shop owners make mistakes.

I hope this was helpful and encouraging. I appreciate all of my customers and I sincerely want them to be happy with what they purchase. I appreciate other shop owners because they provide me with a chance to buy awesome handmade goods and other products and support their growing business.

Do you have questions as a customer or as a shop owner?
Ask. We are always learning and growing and it helps to know what thoughts or questions you have.
